The EU and International Organisations I

Understanding the workings of international organisations (governmental and non-governmental) is rooted in the beginnings of the historical development of international entities around the world. The cours gives a schematic overview of the functioning of principal international organisations: the United Nations, the European Union and the Council of Europe. In addition, international cooperation at the regional level is also taken into consideration. Apart from the basic information about these organisations, their functioning and main activities (different authorities, agencies, additional entities) are also presented. Emphasis is given to the content, scope, purpose and status of each organisation, enabling insight into the fundamental texts, documents and activities pertaining to international cooperation. A structured approach to presenting international organisations introduces the student to institution-specific terminology at the intersection of political, legislative, diplomatic and social dimensions of international unification (human rights, protection of minorities etc.).
Knowledge is put into practice by organising thematic mock conferences. Attention is also given to sources of information relevant for further study.
