Key concepts (ethnic group, ethnie, people, ethnicity, nationalism, nationality; race, racism, tribe, tribalism, ethnos...). Genealogy and epistemology of the studies of ethnicity and nationalism in anthropology.
Key theories of ethnicity and nationalism (modernist, ethnosymbolist, primordialist, culturalist, instrumentalist, transactional). Multiethnicity, multiculturalism, cultural hybridization.
Concept of ethnic identity. Ethnicity as a form of social organization. Ethnicity, class and gender. Ideology of ethnic identification.
Concept of nationalism. Nationalism and nation-state: what comes first? 'Ethnic' and 'civic' nationalism (jus sanguinis and jus soli). 'Core doctrine' of nationalism.
Genealogy of the idea of race in the European history of ideas (18th-20th century). Notions of race in biology and physical anthropology of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. Notions of race in the discourse of the humanities. Race and culture as interchangeable notions. Racialist theories and theories of racism. 'Biological' and 'cultural' racism. Scientific racism. Refutation of scientific racism after WW II.
Emergence and evolution of racist movements in the 19th and 20th century. Racism and colonialism. Recent mutations of the racist movements from the 1980s onwards: cultural (or differential) racism. Racism and migrations.
Metamorphoses of the notion of race in current evolutionist anthropology and biology. The concept of human populations in the population genetics (as a substitute for the now defunct notion of human races).
The contribution of socio-cultural anthropology to the deconstruction of the notion of human race and the struggle against racism (short history from Boas to today).
